An avatar have been following Virtual Moves from SL, and participated in all four exhibitions, asking our avatars questions about the different artworks and the whole project in general. It’s great that a visitor examines the project with so great interest, and her more critical observations, published on this blog, really hit the bull’s eye: The realityHUBs, who are here to guide visitors both in SL and RL, are not capable of doing so – when it comes to technical questions from experienced avatars.

With a focus on art – not on technique skills in SL – our work have been succesful in RL, at the museum. Visitors have clearly been affected by the art institution, and most people was scared to even touch the computers (normally you’re not allowed to touch anything at all in a place like SMK). I believe our presence at the museum have been succesful, not only in showing the visitors how to use the avatars, but also because all of us have had some really interesting conversations, about the project, with very different individuals.

The question is: Would it have been better, if the realityHUBs was a group of two art students and two of Sophie Zhu’s kind?

today I have had a few negative responses on the exhibition.. after a rather long presentation on several artworks to a college class – the only comment I could get out of them was that my reality hub Huni is very ugly – and that you can’t identify with it.. and then they had a collective laugh on huni’s behalf (buhu) furthermore two groups got disappointed because they thought they could visit all the countries of the world in SL – who ever gave them that idea?

Today some groups of children visited the exhibition. They ran up the stairs as soon as they saw the computer images on the wall. They asked me whether it was a computer game…well..I said…actually it is an artwork created with a computer. They didn´t quite understand the concept of a computer artwork. They thought an artwork should either be a painting or a sculpture…plain and simple…I then tried to explain it further but they all argued that the way it looked it had to be a computer game. I guess they have their definition of art from teachers or visits to more traditional museum exhibitions. It was certainly difficult to persuade them that art can be made with a computer….Maybe next time they see a digital artwork they won´t be as hesitant to acknowledge it as art…

I spent the morning yesterday in the exhibition and had a lot of interested and interesting visitors. It seems to be easier to introduce the concept of the exhibition and of SL from a recognizable context, which New Berlin perfectly provides. People often seem to get very inspired and start developing ideas and concepts for possible projects to carry out in SL. Some visitors also suggested that in a future real life installation we should try to make use of some more sophisticated technology enabling the real life visitors to experience more directly the three dimensions eg by wearing glasses or some other technique that I apparently failed to fully understand. So if someone out there knows how that could be done, please don´t hesitate to contact us… I am also looking very much forward to a guided tour in New Berlin. As when visiting new places and foreign cultures in Real Life it is much easier to integrate or at least to understand what is going on when you are introduced by the locals.
